1.MECHANISM OF ACTION
Ceforanide exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Like other β-lactam antibiotics, it binds to and inactivates specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. This inhibition prevents the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to the formation of a defective cell wall and subsequent osmotic lysis and death of the bacterium. Its extended spectrum and moderate resistance to hydrolysis by some β-lactamases are attributed to its specific side-chain chemistry.
