About this product
Product information from the supplier.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a non-ionic water-soluble polymer compound synthesized via free-radical polymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) monomers. Characterized by excellent water solubility, biocompatibility and chemical stability, it has found widespread applications across diverse fields.
I. Basic Properties
Water Solubility: PVP is miscible with water in all proportions and also dissolves in some polar organic solvents (e.g., ethanol, methanol), forming transparent aqueous solutions.
Biocompatibility: It is non-toxic and non-irritating, gentle on human skin and mucous membranes, and has been approved by the FDA for use in food, pharmaceuticals and other fields that involve direct contact with the human body.
Film-forming Ability: Upon drying, PVP forms smooth, tough and glossy films with certain air permeability and water resistance.
Complexation Capacity: The pyrrolidone groups in its molecular structure can form hydrogen bonds or complexes with various substances (such as drugs, dyes and metal ions), thereby playing a role in solubilization and stabilization.
Chemical Stability: PVP maintains stable properties under acidic and alkaline conditions (pH 3–11), resistant to hydrolysis. It also has good heat resistance and does not decompose easily at high temperatures.
II. Main Application Fields
1. Pharmaceutical Industry
Pharmaceutical Excipient
Solubilizer: Improves the solubility and dissolution rate of poorly water-soluble drugs, enhancing their bioavailability, which is applicable for formulations of antibiotics, steroids and other drugs.
Binder: Used in the production of tablets and granules, it strengthens the hardness and stability of granules, reducing fluctuations in tablet disintegration time.
Coating Material: The film coat formed by PVP can mask the bitter taste of drugs, improve drug stability and prevent drugs from moisture and oxidation.
Medical Consumables: Applied in the preparation of medical gels, wound dressings and contact lens care solutions. Thanks to its moisturizing property and biocompatibility, it minimizes irritation to human tissues.
2. Cosmetics Industry
Film-former and Hair Styling Agent: In hairsprays, mousses and styling sprays, the film formed by dried PVP can fix hairstyles, and is easy to wash off without stickiness.
Moisturizer and Stabilizer: In facial creams, lotions and sunscreens, it can lock in moisture and stabilize active ingredients in formulations (such as vitamin C and sunscreen agents) to prevent their decomposition and inactivation.
Thickener: Adjusts the viscosity of cosmetics to improve the user experience of products.
3. Food Industry
As a food additive (E number: E1201), PVP is used for the clarification and stabilization of beer, fruit juices, dairy products and other beverages. It removes turbid substances (e.g., proteins, polyphenols) in the system, improving the transparency and shelf life of drinks.
Utilized in the production of food cling films and edible packaging materials, leveraging its film-forming and barrier properties to extend the storage time of food.
4. Industrial Sector
Coatings and Inks: Serves as a dispersant and stabilizer to prevent pigment particle agglomeration, improving the uniformity, adhesion and glossiness of coatings and inks.
Textile Industry: Applied in the antistatic and wrinkle-resistant finishing of textiles, endowing fabrics with a soft hand feel and antistatic performance.
Water Treatment: Acts as a flocculant to remove suspended impurities and heavy metal ions from water, especially suitable for industrial wastewater treatment.
III. Core Advantages
High Water Solubility and Compatibility: Miscible with water and most polar solvents, PVP can be compounded with various substances, offering strong formulation flexibility.
Safety and Non-toxicity: Compliant with food and pharmaceutical grade standards, it is non-irritating, friendly to the environment and human body, and has a wide range of applications.
Multifunctionality: Integrating multiple functions such as solubilization, binding, film-forming, stabilization and complexation, a single material can meet diverse application requirements, reducing production costs.
Strong Stability: Resistant to acids, alkalis and heat, its performance does not change easily under different processing and storage conditions, ensuring stable product quality.
